The Garden
5
On the west wall of the yard you will see a mural
which was painted by inmates. A yearning for the great outdoors
is evident! The wide doorway to the left of the mural
leads to the garden. Prisoners were employed in the garden that
supplied most of the needs of the prison. Some surplus was supplied
to the hospital. A tall fence surrounding the garden was installed
to keep the townspeople from nicking the vegetables, not to
keep the prisoners in. All rubbish from the gaol was buried
out in this garden, even the original front doors. There is
a gun
turret in one of the walls. Can you find it?
The laundry and store rooms were through the doorway in the
northwest corner. Records indicate that 3 hangings were carried
out in this area. Temporary gallows were constructed when the
need arose. According to the traditions of the day, the hanged
men are buried within the gaol walls. Perhaps you can see a
way out? Look out for the razor wire, which was introduced
to try to prevent escape.
